In 2009, say goodbye to the Ohaus Adventurer SL, and hello to the new Pioneer Series.  With so many analytical and precision balances to choose from, it's hard to know which one best fits your specific weighing applications.  The bottom line is you do not want to over spend for unnecessary features.  Ohaus Pioneer balances offer the basics at an affordable price.  Perform basic weighing, parts counting and percent weighing, but it doesn't need to exceed your current budget for a quality balance.

One of the reasons why the Pioneer PA153 milligram balance is so affordable is because it only supports external calibration.  Several other brands and models also offer internal calibration which is extremely costly.  Convenient yes, but how hard is it to calibrate a precision balance with an external mass weight?  The truth is, it's not difficult at all, but you need to have the appropriate calibration weight in order to properly perform calibration.  Each balance requires a specific mass weight with a certain level of tolerance.  The more sensitive the balance, the more expensive the tolerance is going to be.  We make it easy for you and include the weight on each Ohaus Pioneer web page to limit any confusion.  Once you have the mass in your possession, you can be confident that your quality ohaus balance is measuring weight precisely every time you use it.

One of the other important factors to consider before purchasing an Ohaus Pioneer is the level of accuracy it offers.  The PA153 mg balance has a linearity of ± 2 milligrams.  Basically, this means regardless of what it says the actual weight is, it may be off by up to 2 mg.  If you require something much more accurate than this, you can consider purchasing the Pioneer analytical balance which costs several hundred more dollars.

The Ohaus PA153 laboratory balance features an RS232 interface for data communication.  This feature enables you to connect the Pioneer to a thermal printer, dot matrix printer or to a PC.  In order for this to work properly, you will need to purchase the adapter kit to connect the balance to your computer's serial port or to the printer you decided to purchase.  In addition, your computer will need you to install Winwedge or Ohaus Collect software for the computer to be able to see the balance.  Once installed, you should be able to automatically dump the Pioneer's weight reading directly into a spreadsheet for quick and easy documentation.
